Freedom. What does this word mean to you? Here are a couple of definitions that spoke to me…
- the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.
- the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved.
I skipped right over anything having to do with governments, etc. because… well – you know. I’m not in that space right now.
Today I decided to explore freedom from an individual perspective. It’s the 4th of July weekend. I’m chilling at my girlfriend’s beach house and have some space to unwind and dig into some stuff. The other reason is that “Declaration of Independence” is in the subtitle of my new book.
So naturally, as Independence Day rolled around this year, I have been pondering the word freedom, particularly for women. Freedom means letting go of the labels and unreasonable expectations that other people place on you. Freedom means following your own instincts and dreams. Freedom means being your own person, for once and for all.
My mission is to inspire women to reawaken their personal power and embrace their dreams. This is one of my major goals with my new book, Just Do You, a Declaration of Independence from Guilt, Obligation and Shame. I explore 50 lessons that I’ve learned during my first 50 years of life. I included journal prompts and space for journaling to prompt your own personal introspection and exploration. Learn more here.
Here are a few lessons from my book that speak to this theme. But it’s far from simple. To be truly free, we must fight against our own doubts and others’ constraints. We must push past limiting beliefs to embrace our true power and live our lives authentically to honor our true selves.
- Lesson #4: Live with no regrets.
- Lesson #21: Embrace your dreams.
- Lesson #23: Setting boundaries sets you free!
- Lesson #26: Just say no.
- Lesson #31: You don’t need their permission.
